At Parc Provence, we strive to provide moments of joy for our residents as much as possible. In celebration of today, the International Day of Happiness, we are sharing some of our favorite smiles with you!

What is the International Day of Happiness?

The conceptualizer and founder of the International Day of Happiness is Jayme Illien. Jayme Illien was an orphan rescued from the streets of Calcutta, India by Mother Theresa’s International Mission of Hope charities.

In 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution recognizing happiness as a “fundamental human goal.” In 2012, the first ever UN Conference on Happiness was held. That year, the UN General Assembly established that the International Day of Happiness would be observed every year on March 20. It was first celebrated in 2013.

How do we create moments of joy and happiness for Parc Provence residents?

People who have Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and other forms of memory loss live in the present. While they may not recall past experiences, their emotions are very real. We strive to provide as many positive emotional experiences for our residents as possible each and every day at Parc Provence. We do this by developing a widely varied activity schedule. It is tailored to our residents’ interests and needs. From engaging musical entertainment to art classes and outings, we love making our residents smile!

In addition, we get to know our residents’ special talents and individual interests. For example, one resident frequently visited staff to tell us her favorite jokes. Knowing that she loved humor, we created a comedy club and it’s one of her favorite social events on the schedule! Another resident enjoyed listening to his records, but did so by himself in his room. We encouraged him to play his records for the men’s club, and record day is now a regular feature enjoyed by the entire group.
